Sustainability in Düsseldorf
Did you know that 42% of Düsseldorf's total area is green?
Düsseldorf is greener than almost any other major city. Parks and green spaces form a green axis across the Rhine metropolis. Green oases in the city include the Rheinwiesen, Hofgarten, and Nordpark with its Japanese Garden. The green lung of Düsseldorf is the Volksgarten, which was extensively expanded for the Federal Garden Show.
Green Roofs and Facades
Often, roofs and facades remain unused, but with proper greening, they can bring many benefits.
Europe's largest green facade is located here in Düsseldorf: At KÖ-Bogen II in the city center, 30,000 hornbeams have been planted. This green facade acts as a natural air conditioner, providing an ecological benefit equivalent to around 80 mature deciduous trees, improving the microclimate in the city.
Since March 2023, there has been a Vertical Garden on Graf-Adolf-Straße in Düsseldorf: the first planted advertising space in NRW - and one of the first nationwide. A 30 m² digital advertising space is framed by 100 m² of greenery, contributing to noise reduction in the busy street, actively saving CO², and improving air quality.
With these and many other projects, Düsseldorf not only sharpens its profile as a sustainable, livable, and future-proof city but also makes an important contribution towards becoming climate neutral by 2035.
